2025/3/15 March's "Food as Medicine Recipes" from Kampo Pharmacist Ai Okubo to Revitalize You at a Cellular Level
The chilly air is gradually softening, and warm, spring-like days are becoming more frequent. However, spring also brings environmental changes such as a late-season chill, pollen, PM2.5, and new beginnings and farewells, making it a challenging time to manage one's health.
This month's key ingredient is rapeseed blossoms (nanohana). In traditional Chinese medicine, it is said that consuming bitter foods in spring helps promote circulation within the body and excrete accumulated toxins. With our food-as-medicine recipes using nanohana, which is rich in detoxifying compounds, maintain your health during the changing seasons.
Nanohana contains abundant detoxifying compounds such as isothiocyanates, polyphenols, and alkaloids, as well as antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. We have two quick recipes: "Nanohana and Scallop Yukhoe," simply tossed with scallops rich in muscle-supporting taurine and protein, and "Nanohana and Clam Oatmeal Risotto," a quick recipe utilizing oatmeal to help regulate intestinal health and blood sugar.
Please try these dishes as part of your spring health management menu, especially during this season of fluctuating weather!
