Kampo Pharmacist Ai Okubo's Cell-Revitalizing Early Summer Food Medicine Recipes
For sluggishness and swelling! Watercress to promote the circulation of Qi and water
From late May, when the fatigue of the new fiscal year subsides, to June, when the rainy season begins, changes in atmospheric pressure and humidity can put a strain on the "Spleen," which is responsible for digestion and absorption. This can lead to sluggishness, swelling, and digestive issues. Additionally, excessive stress, and irregular eating and sleeping habits can generate "damp-heat," leading to irritability, skin problems, and insomnia.
Therefore, in early summer, let's incorporate medicinal foods that support the "Liver and Spleen."
◆This month's key ingredient
Watercress
Watercress is often thought of as a garnish, but it is actually a nutrient-rich vegetable containing vitamins C, E, and K, as well as iron and calcium. Its diuretic properties help to expel excess "dampness," its high antioxidant power supports the "Liver," and its aromatic compounds promote the circulation of "Qi." It is a perfect medicinal food for early summer when temperatures and humidity rise.
